Maternity Shoot: Part One

Gaelyn • Leave a Comment

John and I had the pleasure of being photographed by Ana do Amaral on a super fun maternity shoot. By the time we got around to doing the shoot I was 37 weeks pregnant. I thought that I might regret not having it done earlier in the pregnancy, when I wasn’t so big and I had more options on what clothes fit me. But I ended up feeling great and in retrospect, I love knowing that one week after these photos were taken Oliver was born! So they are really precious & I couldn’t be happier about them! Thank you Ana, they are beautiful.

I will break them out into several posts. Here is the first:

Our First Moments

Gaelyn • Leave a Comment

Here’s a little look at our baby boy in those very first moments.

After a long 18 hour labor (it really wasn’t as bad as it sounds, after the epidural there was lot of waiting: for contractions to regulate, to dilate, and for the baby to get into the right position) we finally meet

We were shocked to find that baby boy looks alot like mama, including a dark head of hair. Although, John’s baby sister was born with a dark head of hair that later turned blonde, so we will have to wait and see. And while his eyes look dark in this photo they are still gray (more wait and see).

Here he is looking itty bitty in his Papa’s arms. I love seeing my husband as a father!!

Finally discharged from the hospital Oliver is dressed and ready to meet the world!

My brain is too tired to tell you all about how amazing it feels to be a mother. But let me simply say we are elated and we feel complete we have never been so over the moon about anything.

In Case You Were Wondering: I Popped!

Gaelyn • Leave a Comment

Wondering why it’s been so quiet around here? I’m guessing you probably figured it out, but we had our baby! On Friday after work, at 38 weeks, I went into labor!

On Saturday June 29th at 9:23 pm our son was born. Please welcome John Oliver Jenkins. 7 lbs 14 oz. 21 inches long.

Throughout the pregnancy, in addition to my daily outfit photos, we set up a camera in one spot at home and I took a photo every morning before I left the house. This allowed us to do a fun little stop motion video that shows my belly getting bigger and bigger in a short time.

After our delivery, I received a txt message from a friend in Massachusetts that included an audio clip of his toddler son welcoming Ollie into the world. I pretty much died when I heard it & John made sure it made its way into the video.

We are totally smitten and having a great time getting to know our little bug and getting into our new routine. Once I get it together enough to resume some daily outfits, we will be back. Haha

Outfit Of The Day: The Gaslight Anthem

Gaelyn • 1 Comment

Rockin’ more men’s tee shirts today. Still have to buy my own (i.e. cant borrow any from the hubs). I spotted someone on instagram wearing this one and had to get it. I love The Gaslight Anthem plus it had an anchor on it, how could I not?! Still feeling super comfy and easy today but the headscarf and lipstick helps me feel accessorized and pulled together.

I got told (AGAIN?!) that I looked like Popeye today. Apparently I’m channeling a bald buff old sailor. Get into it.

Outfit Of The Day: Coral Fedora

Gaelyn • Leave a Comment

This might be one of my favorite late in the game maternity dresses. In other words, when not much fits, or makes you feel great, I feel like this dress delivers. And double bonus, its super comfy.  I wore it for my LA baby shower and also for my recent maternity shoot. Also I love coral. It’s one of my favorite colors for spring/summer. It’s bright and happy and it really pops against tanned summer skin.

Outfit Of The Day: Tribal Tee

This used to be a tunic thing. I usually wore it as a beach cover up over my swimsuit. But today, it fits like a tee shirt. Keeping it simple and comfy but still fun with a little pattern.

Outfit Of The Day: Liz Lange Dress Still Holding Strong

Gaelyn • Leave a Comment

Hello Monday. Hope everyone had a good weekend. Ours was pretty nice. We had a super fun maternity shoot on Saturday and I cant wait to get the photos back so I can share them! It was so much fun. My co-worker and his wife just moved here from Brazil 5 months ago, she is a photographer and looking to build her portfolio here in LA. She asked to photograph me fairly early on in the pregnancy and I was really excited about it, but we just now got around to it. I was worried that at 37 weeks (ready to pop!) I wouldn’t feel very photogenic and I wouldn’t have as many cute clothing options to wear, but I actually felt great and was really happy!

I rode the wave of feeling great and being comfortable & confident with my body and decided to rock a knee length dress today (hello there thigh high compression hose!). This is my Liz Lange for Target dress that I found on clearance for $10 and it has proven to be a great staple through out the pregnancy (as seen here and here and here). So find yourself a stretchy black simple maternity dress, I imagine you won’t regret it!

Outfit Of The Day: Elastic It Is Then

Gaelyn • Leave a Comment

I tried to wiggle my way into my pair of red maternity jeans, and while I managed to eventually get into them I decided they were probably not going to be very comfortable given the dance it took to get into them haha – so leggings it is! PS apparently I’m a total ham today, you have been warned.

Our baby bear is officially full term today. Meaning if he happens to be born today then he will be at no risk and he will not be considered pre-mature etc. Granted, he could decided to cook for 3 more weeks but we are ready for him to get here already! Feel free to join us whenever you are ready baby!

As much as I didn’t want to be one of those people that was like “okay, I’m over it”, last night when I was trying to figure out what to wear I was kind of “over it”. It’s sad – I don’t want to have that bad attitude. But I haven’t felt my fingertips in weeks (pregnancy carpal tunnel), I hate the way my legs look, shooting pains in my forearms are keeping me up at night, even when I sleep with a wrist brace (again, pregnancy carpal tunnel),  and I’m sort of sick of wearing compression hose around the clock. But this morning when I was rubbing lotion on my bare belly I actually felt beautiful and grateful for all the amazing things my body is capable of. I know that in just a few weeks the feeling in my fingers will return but there is a possibility this belly will not (only time will tell). So, I started today a-new and really tried to cherish my body. I think I am finding it particularly challenging because I have never had body issues (very thankfully) and it really can play mind games on you. So here is to starting over and trying not to beat yourself up. To cherishing your body, focusing less on your “Shrek” feet and swollen legs and more on the awesomeness that is childbirth. It’s amazing what we are capable of and I know that I am strong enough and capable enough to put up with a little discomfort a little bit longer.

Originally, I didn’t have the belt on this morning and John said something to the effect of “really covering it all up there, maternity style huh?” Which may have had something to do with my bad attitude (“whatever, it fits, it works”) But I added the belt to give it more shape and it made me feel better. It goes to show that taking an effort in your appearance at all stages of pregnancy can greatly effect not only how you look but also how you feel.

A Few Last Minute Impulse Purchases

John and I have some sort of strange thing for anchors. Something about them is timeless and reminds us of old grandpas, tough sailors, faded tattoos, salty seas and history. We seem to be drawn to them. When I stumbled across these Rickshaw Design items for J.Crew I couldn’t pass them up. Little Oliver already has quit the collection of anchor items and its almost becoming like a little symbol or reminder of him for me.

John and I are opting to get diaper bag inserts rather than a diaper bag. This way we can switch out between bags and have our own. We ordered this one from PishPosh so we can just swoop it and grab it and throw everything in any bag we want! But I thought this little anchor diaper sack was pretty rad too and love how unisex it is! And well, the little burp cloth and bib set? I had too.
